Nutritional Counseling for Oral Health in Southern California

For client review: this page is new. The old site promoted this service on the home page and in the contact form but had no page for it.

Diet shapes oral health more directly than almost anything else, and for older and medically complex patients the usual advice often does not apply.

Tooth Fairy Mobile Dental Hygiene offers practical nutritional guidance as part of a hygiene visit, focused on what a patient can comfortably eat and how to protect their teeth while they eat it.

What is Nutritional Counseling for Oral Health?

It is a conversation about food, timing and texture, and what each of those is doing to the patient teeth and gums. It is not a weight-loss plan or a medical diet, and it never replaces guidance from a physician or a registered dietitian.

The focus is narrow on purpose: how often sugars and acids reach the teeth, how long they stay there, and what can be adjusted without taking away food a patient still enjoys.

What We Look At

AreaWhat we discussWhy it matters
FrequencyHow often food and sweetened drinks are taken through the day, including sipping between meals.Frequency does more damage than quantity. Constant sipping never lets enamel recover.
Texture and softnessSoft diets, purees and supplement drinks, which are common after a stroke or with swallowing difficulty.Soft, sweetened foods cling to teeth and are a frequent hidden cause of rapid decay.
Dry mouthMedications that reduce saliva, and what to drink or use instead of sugary lozenges and sweets.Without saliva, sugar stays in contact with the teeth far longer.
Hidden sugarsSupplement drinks, cough syrups, chewable vitamins and flavoured waters.Several common medications and supplements are sweetened and taken daily.
Practical swapsSmall, realistic changes agreed with the patient and their caregiver.A change someone agrees to is the only kind that lasts.

Who We Serve

This is most valuable for patients on soft or supplemented diets, people taking multiple daily medications, patients with dry mouth, and anyone whose decay rate has increased without an obvious cause.

Care That Comes to You

Guidance is given during a normal hygiene visit at home or in a care facility, with the caregiver present where that helps, and written down so it is not lost after the visit.

Any concern that needs medical or dietetic input is referred to the patient physician or dietitian, and anything requiring dental diagnosis or treatment is referred to a licensed dentist.
